Black and Decker Cordless Hedge Trimmer  Review

This cordless hedge trimmer review features the Black & Decker LHT2220. This is part of the Black and Decker 20V Max range of power tools which uses the 20 volt Lithium Ion battery.

Below is a video review of this trimmer that will give you some indication of what to expect from it. Watch the video review and then read on to see the accompanying written review and specs of this particular hedger.

Black and Decker LHT2220 Review

The hedge trimmer featured here is just one of 8 lawn and garden tools that Black and Decker has put together in the range, all use this same battery.
This means that any keen gardener who wanted to build a set of handy cordless yard tools that could all share the same battery can add them as and when they were required.

Lit Ion technology provides us with a very much improved type of battery compared to the older type of power tools battery that we have used in the past. The main benefit to us as a power hedge trimmer user, is the reduced weight. This new type of battery cuts the weight down by half while still retaining the same amount of power.

The weight of the LHT2220 is only 5.9 pounds which is really light for a trimmer with a good 22 inch sized blade that this one has. Large enough while still light and will let you trim 3,000 square feet of hedges and shrubs around the yard  all with one charge.

The pole hedge trimmer is another trimmer from the B & D 20V Max system. This one is used for taller hedges, to see the full list of gardening tools that use this battery visit the link above.

Another benefit that users find with cordless hedge trimmers, is the fact they won’t need to rely on a power socket being close to hand. These cordless versions can be used anywhere and are particularly suited to those who have a longer yard.

Charging , Fitting the Battery and Operating the Trimmer

The Instruction Manual tells us that the charger will charge a battery that is fully depleted in  around four hours. The procedure is to plug in the charger, place the battery into charger and ensure that the LED which is green, flashes meaning the battery is charging OK. When the LED remains ON all the time, that tells us that the battery is now fully charged.

The procedure of installing the battery is pretty straight forward as is removing it. To insert it, slide the battery in untill you hear a click. Wiggle it to ensure that it is seated properly. To remove it, push down the button located at the rear of the battery. This allows you to pull out the battery and place it into the charger ready for the next time you will need to use it.

To operate the cordless hedge trimmer, push the “lock off button” back towards you while holding the rear handle and squeezing on the trigger. When the motor starts up the “lock off button” can be released. The trimmer motor will continue running untill the trigger switch is released. For safety reasons it’s recommended not to lock the switch to an ON position.

Below are a few snippets from the reviews left for the LHT2220.

“I have only written a single review of all the products that I have bought over the years. I recently purchased the B&D 20 volt lithium hedge trimmer, and I have found it to be lightweight, well balanced, easy to operate, and have a surprising battery life.I use it to trim 500 sq ft of miserable, sticky, and tangled asiatic jasmine, including edge trimming and verticutting, and the machine handles it with aplomb, on one charge.Amazing.”

“B&D has a whole line of 20-volt, battery-powered things. Buy several, and you will always have a pile of charged-up batteries for whatever you need to do.

Ever tried cutting the bushes with an electric clipper? Tugging and pulling at the cord until, “oops,” you unplug it? Ever want to just make a small, quick trim somewhere? Ever think how much work it is to keep small gasoline engines functioning? Then you need an electric, battery-powered tool.

If you are going to get an electric, battery-powered tool, get a good one. These B&D things are perfect. Quiet, reliable, and easy to start (OK, any electric tool would fit that last bit, but the B&D did for me.) What I really like is that the several tools I bought all use the same battery pack. Drawback? Now I have about half a dozen chargers all around my house.”
