A pole hedge trimmer is a must have tool if your hedging has been left unmaintained for too long. Of course this situation is never ever planned it just happens when life gets too busy. Perhaps you have even been enjoying the privacy that the high boundary hedge has provided. But now it’s gone beyond a privacy thing and become more of a shrinking daylight problem.
The version I have chosen to review today is an electric pole hedge trimmer, the Earthwise CVPH41018 which is a mains powered model. It has plus points and minus points that will need to be taken into account if you were thinking about buying one. Although being a 2 in 1 tool, all would not be lost if you felt to uncomfortable using the long handled system.
The 2 in 1 means that you can use it as a traditional trimmer and quickly convert it to an extendable hedge trimmer whenever it was required. This dual purpose tool is also ideal when there are tall shrubs to be maintained which more often than not only need to cut back once each year.
See the Earthwise CVPH41018 trimmer here.

CVPH41018 Pole Hedge Trimmer Plus and Minus Points
Personally speaking I think that the main plus point about the Earthwise CVPH41018 is that it is a convertible pole hedge trimmer.
It provides the flexibility to shoot around the yard trimming anything from tall hedges and tall single specimen shrubs right down to the smaller varieties. The only restraint being the proximity to a power point which of course can be rectified to a certain extent with longer extension cords.
Easy 2 in 1 Conversion
To convert from a conventional hedge trimmer to a pole trimmer is quick and easy with the removal of the power handle and sliding in the extension pole.
The extension pole is telescopic and can be adjusted for each height you want to use. There is an adjustment collar that is loosened and tightened for each length required.
Choosing the angle you want the head to be used is as simple as pressing in the spring loaded button found on the side of the pivot head. There is a choice of 6 positions which are in multiples of 30% giving a total rotation of 150 degrees.
Releasing the spring loaded button and moving the head back and forwards will allow the button to click back into position and locking the pivot head in the desired position.
Obviously using the head set at 90% will allow the top of the hedge to be trimmed flat but the other settings can be useful too.
Using the head set at 30% for example will allow you to trim the tops of low shrubs and the tops of low growing hedges. This can alleviate stooping over these low jobs making it that bit easier on the back.
The specs of the electric motor fitted to these long reach hedge trimmers are 120 volts, 60 Hz, 2.8 amps.
This drives the blades which are made of hardened steel at 3200 strokes per minute. The cutting capabilities of the blades is said to be 3/4 of an inch.
As with most other hedge trimmers I have reviewed take this figure with a pinch of salt. In other words, if the growth is young and soft then fine. If the wood is hard and old I wouldn’t recommend cutting through 3/4 wood for too long.
To keep the extension cord from coming loose from the trimmer plug there is a cord retainer to loop the extension through. To protect the user there is a blade guard provided which slides on over the blades when not in use.
Trimmer Was Heavy to Use
The main criticism that some folk have pointed out is the weight being a bit heavy. It does weigh 9.8 pounds and for a pole hedge trimmer that’s not to exorbitant.
They usually are that bit heavier but when used more frequently you soon pick up the knack of how to wield these machines with a bit more expertize.
The problem with these electric versions is the fact that the motor is situated at the top area of the pole which does amplify the weight problem. Gas versions have the engine at the rear which gives better balance and can be less tiring but again not everyone wants to use a gas model.
You will need to balance out the weight of the pole trimmer versus carrying and re-setting up of a ladder in a safe position for each section of hedge you intend to cut. If you have been using the later method then you will already know what’s involved with setting up ladders.
Here are a couple of tips that may help if you find using the trimmer a bit tiresome. If you are already using a heavy string trimmer and wear a harness then this to could also be used to take much of the weight of the pole trimmer.
Not perfect I know and would probably work best when trimming the face of the hedge when cutting vertically. Although if the hedge were not too high it could still be a solution.
Of course this would involve fitting a round clamp bracket near to the bottom end of the extension pole and clipping the harness clip onto it.
My second idea comes from the number of folk who have already purchased this particular model of electric pole hedge trimmer though my account.
They also bought the Stout Backsaver Grip Attachment for Garden Tools at the same time so I believe they intend to use them together. See it here.
The Stout Backsaver has many uses and so too does a pole hedge trimmer believe it or not. I have been asked questions like “Would this extendable hedge trimmer be suitable for cutting back the brush and brambles in a rough area of my backyard”.Google+
